Git: Solving the Pendrive Problem

◆The Pendrive Problem

A decade ago, developers used pen drives and emails to share their code with other developers so that they could work on the same project, even when they were geographically distant. Although this approach allowed collaboration, it created several serious problems. The main issue was the difficulty in identifying changes made by other developers in the code. This problem often led to confusion, code conflicts, and wastage of time. Identifying the latest and correct version of the code was necessary to save time and ensure that the project progressed efficiently.

◆Additional points:

◉ There was no proper history of changes, so developers could not track older versions of the code.

◉ If a mistake was made, restoring a previous correct version was very difficult.

◉ Multiple developers sometimes overwrote each other’s work accidentally.

◉ Team collaboration became inefficient due to the lack of a centralized system.

◉ These problems led to the need for version control systems like Git.

This is why version control systems were introduced—to track changes, manage versions, and improve collaboration efficiently.

◆Why Version Control Exists

Version control exists to solve problems that occur when multiple developers work on the same code. To avoid these problems, developers created Version Control Systems (VCS). A version control system helps programmers identify changes made by other developers so that they do not overwrite each other’s code.

It automatically keeps track of the complete history of code changes, including who made the change, what was changed, and when it was changed. This makes it easy to go back to an older version of the code if something goes wrong.

Git is the most popular version control system used today. In Git, each developer works on their own copy of the project. They can create branches to work on different features or topics at the same time. After finishing their work, they commit the changes and then merge them into the main code. Git compares the changes and helps resolve conflicts if two people modify the same part of the code.

Using Git, developers can work together efficiently, safely experiment with new ideas, and manage large projects without confusion or data loss.

◆The power of Git:

In the end, the pendrive problem helped developers understand the need for a better way to manage code. Version control systems like Git made teamwork easier by tracking changes and preventing code loss. With Git, developers can work together safely and efficiently. This is why version control has become an essential tool in modern software development.
